As Buenos Aires feels a distinct chill in the air as the ‘polar wave’ rolls on through, we have to become more creative in our choice of recreational activities; indoor only please! Apart from getting that warming sensation and red cheeks while slurping Argentinean wine at one of our Buenos Aires wine tastings you could check out this year’s Ciudad Emergente, one of the biggest events on the Buenos Aires cultural calendar and guess what; it is free!!
From Wednesday the 6th until Sunday the 10th of June you can march yourself off to the Recoleta Cultural Centre to check out the 5th edition of this huge mama of a nouveau festival. But what will you find there? Well, the name itself, Ciudad Emergente (emerging city) gives you somewhat of an idea; Buenos Aires government and the ministry of culture has put together an ecclectic, artistic program that showcases the best of underground culture and emerging talent in the field of music, art, dance, fashion, film, stand up comedy and so forth, something for everyone!
In the the music stakes, past performances has skyrocketed bands, DJ’s and performers into starry eyed world of rock n’roll (in Argentina at least) such as Los Alamos and Victoria Mil. This year’s 50 or so newbie bands in this edition of Cuidad Emergente will be playing their hearts out to get their own ticket on to the fame train, alongside other international performers who in the past have included acts like Ximena Sarinana from Mexico and Russian Red from Spain.
If you are a bit of a music/film geek the you’ll revel in cinematic motions at BACIFI space, which has put together a special collabration celebrating the relationship between worlds of music and film, including a showing of Leonard Cohen’s lendary shot in 16mm, and other artists like old-timers ‘Simon & Garfunkel’, soulful ‘Arcade Fire’, DJ legends ‘Chemical Broithers’, crazy kids ‘The Libertines, and…the Kings of Leon!!! SEX ON FIRE….I’m getting down there to check out ‘Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon’ now! That will certainly warm me up!
