Top 5 Overrated Buenos Aires Activities

Buenos Aires attracts millions of tourists every year from all over the globe, lured to the Paris of South America for its romantic appeal, world famous tango, wine and tango shows. As an expat having lived in Buenos Aires for over two years, I frequently get asked advice on the things to do while in Buenos Aires. While I usually recommend a wine tasting with Anuva Wines, a trip to Tigre for the day and a steak dinner at La Cabrera, there are certain popular activities and hot spots in Buenos Aires I tend to never recommend to anyone. Why? Because, in this humble man’s opinion, they are overrated, unoriginal and simply boring.

(Please don’t send me hate mail, this list is simply my opinion).

Number 5.

The tango/dinner show. *Jaws drop* Yes. I said it. The tourist activity that practically everyone goes to when they first come to Buenos Aires is something I simply don’t recommend. HOWEVER, I do recommend Narrative Tango Tours. These two fabulous ladies will show you a real tango show, performed for tango enthusiasts and not a tango factory with mediocre food and lackluster dance. The overpriced tango/dinner shows are aimed to bring in boat loads of money while churning out as many tourists as possible. If you want the REAL tango experience of Buenos Aires, that yes, that might even include a lesson of your own, talk to these ladies. http://www.narrativetangotours.com/

Number 4.

MALBA. The art museum that everyone is talking about. Yes, it can be interesting from time to time with expositions from many different artists from around the world, but after about 20 minutes, it becomes quite boring. Maybe I am just not a museum guy. Check out smaller galleries walking through Palermo Soho.

Number 3.

Alto Palermo & Abasto Shopping. Any hotel desk that sends you to a store in Alto Palermo or Abasto is probably receiving a commission. If you have been to any mall in the United States or Europe, you have experienced, these two malls. VERY EXPENSIVE and not very unique. Check out the boutique clothing stores on Cordoba and Santa Fe Avenues if you are looking for some more unique stuff without the shopping mall prices. Clothing designers have opened many small boutique stores to show off their creative work.

Number 2.

Colonia trip. If you are planning a quick day trip to Uruguay, try to plan a few more days into the equation. You can travel to a much nicer beach destination or smaller, more interesting towns. Colonia is overpriced and while there is some interesting history in a small section of the town, after a few hours, you will be checking your return ticket for the time back to Buenos Aires.

Number 1.

Puerto Madero. Overpriced and underwhelming. Lots of US-based franchise restaurants (Hooters, TGI Fridays), which, by the way, charge almost double the prices you will find in the US. If you want to check it out, go for a walk around the revitalized military bases that are now luxury stores and restaurants.

  1. I totally agree!!! For tango its better to get a local to take you to a milonga. Who needs an art museum when the antique shops on Defensa street have art and sculpture and everything is for sale! Walking down Santa Fe is always a sure success for shopping and Colonia bores me to tears. Although I do enjoy the ferry ride. Great post!

Thanks for the suggestions. Can I ask what small, more interesting towns you would recommend instead of Colonia?
