This past Saturday a friend and I stumbled upon El Galpon, an organic food co-op in the Chacarita neighborhood of Buenos Aires. Walking along the street I recognized the bright yellow building from pictures I’d seen, so we decided to head down the narrow road leading to it. My friend being from Vancouver, British Columbia, and me from Portland, Oregon, felt like we had been transported back to the Pacific Northwest before we even entered the market. The land surrounding the indoor market, once a train yard, had been created into a tranquil community garden and a dozen or so people were busily caring for it. Outside the building there were 2 or 3 men running an organic parilla, a group of friends playing banjo and singing along, and a group of kids playing on a swing set. After entering the market our shock continued as we viewed the large selection of obviously high quality, and organic, produce, dairy products, meats, wines, and other food products. While deciding what to buy, and enjoying the small wine tasting going on, we were noticing that the clients looked right out of our homeland, and this was obviously a new Buenos Aires subculture for both of us. After making our purchases we exited the market and decide to order a choripan from the parilla. A few minutes later I was handed my organic, hormone free, choripan on a delicious seed filled whole-wheat bun. Sitting down we looked around in amazement, noticing again that we were in the middle of an abandoned train yard filled with burned out train cars, but also felt incredibly peaceful and like we were in the country. After lingering a few minutes to enjoy the sound of wind chimes, receive a free massage, and lack of city noises, we headed home certain we would return again soon.
The El Galpón market is located in the Chacarita neighborhood a block away from the famous Chacarita Cemetery. It is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9am-6pm. To get to it either take the B line subway to the Federico Lacroze stop or one of the many bus lines that stop nearby. To find out more go to El Galpón’s website.
