After web surfing a little bit about wine and tastings in Buenos Aires, I was surprised to find out that tomorrow is Global Cabernet Day. I thought to myself, since when did Cabernet Day exist? Why have I never heard of it? I decided to do some research.
Cabernet Day was the brainchild of Rick Bakas of Bakas Media who is also a sommelier. His idea was quickly adapted by many wineries all over the world. In 2011 it had been calculated that 4.5 million people had participated in Cabernet Day. Check it out on Twitter, it’s trending like crazy right now under the hashtag #cabernetday.
The King of Reds certainly does deserve it’s own day. It’s thick-skinned, tannic, big-structured, dark-fruited, becomes more elegant with age, hearty and it can grow practically anywhere in the world. It’s versatile, it’s popular, it’s a hybrid of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s certainly the wine I drink most frequently. If it were up to me I’d give it two or three holidays per year; people would get the day off work, kids would stay home from school and everyone would toast, (kind of like Thanksgiving with more Cab and less turkey).
Tomorrow we are going to honor the new holiday by doing an internal tasting of Cabernet Sauvignons sent to us by various wineries to possibly include in our wine club. (I’ll post pics of that then. Here are some pics of last week’s internal wine tasting, you can get a good look at the team and at our space as well there).
Although there does seem to be some discrepancies about when Cabernet Day actually is:
Some people appear to be off a day, but when it comes to drinking a nice Cab Sav, does it really matter when?
