One great thing about living in the southern hemisphere is that the seasons are opposite. So many people touring Buenos Aires and Argentina who are from the northern hemisphere very much appreciate being able to escape the cold winter, in the middle of cold winter to spend some time in the sun.
However, a lot of tourists do not know that the best time to visit Buenos Aires is actually October-November, in late spring early summer here, or March-April, which would be late summer early fall. There is only one exception to this and that is if you are going to Patagonia.
You have to visit Patagonia in January or February unless you want extremely cold and dreary weather! So obviously if you are planning to visit El Calafate and Perito Moreno glacier, or Bariloche to hike and sunbathe by clear mountain lakes, or climb the Fitzroy summit near El Chalten, then you should definitely come in January or February as the weather is ideal.
However, when you come through Buenos Aires, especially in January, be ready for lots of shops and restaurants to be closed. It is vacation time here right now, and typically people either take the first 15 days (called a “quincena”) of January or the second 15 days. At this time the beaches all along the Atlantic coast in Argenina as well as in Uruguay get packed with people.
Also, in Buenos Aires, January and February are the months of hot and humid weather.
This is why I recommend coming in the periphery of the summer because the weather is ideal and if you are to travel internally in the country, you don’t have to compete with Argentines who are going on vacation for seats on planes or on tours.
Obviously if the only time you can come is January then you should obviously come! We will be awaiting you at wine tastings in Buenos Aires with crisp Torrontes and sparkling wine to start off!
