Argentina Wine Review – Nieto Senetiner Champana Extra Brut

Bubbly is always lovely. Really, basically always lovely. Why are champagnes and bubbles so well loved around the world? I believe that it has to be because sparkling wine and champagne is always associated with a toast or a celebration.

In Argentina it is the same, if not more so. At every birthday party and every event of any level whatsoever, you will find a champagne, sparkling white or perhaps a sparkling cider (which are quite tasty by the way, and have just enough alcohol to keep things interesting).

Now of course, sparkling white wine made outside of Champagne, France, is not actually Champagne, however the Argentineans like to call their bubbles “champana”, which is the Spanish for champagne.

Bodegas Nieto Senetiner makes a whole line of sparkling white wines, six in total, ranging from a Nature, Brut Nature and Extra Brut to two different Grand Cuvees and an icon sparkling.

Tonight, at my friend’s birthday party in the central neighborhood of Monserrat, just off of 9 de Julio (the biggest avenue in the world), we sipped Nieto Senetiner Extra Brut on a rooftop terrace, overlooking a massive mural of Eva Peron (not kidding). Dinner was quite bland, but it was a Tuesday night and everybody had to work all day and has to get up for work tomorrow so it was sandwiches de miga, picada and other finger foods for dinner.

The wine for me was quite nice. Bodegas Nieto Senetiner make this wine using the Charmat method (the same method as our Hom Sparkling) which means that fermentation is done in stainless steel tanks as opposed to in the bottle itself. The latter would be the methode champenoise.

The color is a bit pinkish actually, and this predominantly pinot noir sparkling has a nice fruity quality to it with hints of raspberry and peach as well as a bit of nut flavor. With consistent soft bubbles this wine is a winner for a celebration.

I can affirm that Argentina has some of the best sparkling wines outside of Champagne. The roses are particularly nice – mostly rose de Malbec. If you go, check ‘em out!
