Argentina Wine Review – Latitud 33 Malbec from Bodegas Chandon

Since Argentina in general doesn’t have a history of fine wine until the past 15-20 years, there are still a lot of restaurants here that haven’t changed with the times and begun offering some of the incredible limited production wines coming out of the country. This is of course what we tend to like best and what we offer at our wine tastings in Buenos Aires.  For places like these restaurants I have a few go-to wines that are dependably drinkable and decently priced.  One of them is the Latitude 33 Malbec produced by Bodegas Chandon in Agrelo, Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza.  You might recognize the name Chandon from the famous champagne and sparkling wines they produce in various countries around the world, including France and Argentina.

The wine has a catchy but simple label featuring a large “33” and the crosshairs of a map with a longitude and latitude line crossing.  For those not familiar with Mendoza, but it roughly has the latitude of 33 degrees south of the equator, hence the name of this wine.

The 2010 Latitud 33 Malbec is a good table wine that is very typical of young Argentine Malbec.  The wine has been aged in French and American oak for 3-4 months.  It has a pretty ruby red color, a nice nose of cherries, plums, vanilla, and even a little dulce de leche.  In the mouth it is fairly straightforward, but with nice notes of red fruit and a pleasantly smooth finish.

The Latitud 33 Malbec is a nice everyday drinking wine to pair with roasted meat, to bring to a summer barbeque, with pastas, or even fish.  Seemingly the price of the Latitud 33 line wines has jumped more than average over the past couple years, and currently selling here in Argentina for 30-35 pesos a bottle, but still is a decent value, is much more enjoyable than wines just a few pesos less.
