Argentina Wine Review – Finca Flichman Malbec Roble 2010

Happy new year to everyone out there! According to the Mayan’s we have only this year left so we should really make it count! In our attempts to taste Argentine wines in their entirety, we conquered about 4 different bottles in a wine tasting on New Years Eve in Buenos Aires.

Ironically, New Years Eve in Buenos Aires is much more of a family affair than it is in the United States. In the USA, we have Christmas which is quite a somber, daytime holiday and more kid/present/daytime oriented. As I explained in previous posts, Christmas here is held on Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) and is accompanied by lots of fireworks. New years, however, puts the fireworks used on Noche Buena in perspective. This year, watching from the terrace of my brother-in-law, I saw *easily* thousands of fireworks exploding in various colors over the neighborhood. I am not talking about the small, for kids kind. I am talking about rockets being launched into the air and explosions that left my ears ringing well into the night.

You can only imagine how scared the dogs, cats, and especially birds must feel on this night. I actually saw a bird flying through the midst of all of the explosions and I have to think that it felt like a World War II fighter pilot.

Anyway, with our bountiful harvest of summertime foods on the table, we had several bottles of Argentine wine… one of which was Finca Flichman Malbec Roble 2010. This 100% Malbec varietal has 3 months in oak barrels and another 3 months of bottle aging before release to the market.

We found it rather pleasant but a little on the light side for an oaked wine. I had expected a little more power and concentration there. The flavor profile was quite nice, however, with the distinctive black cherry and plum characteristics to be expected from Malbec.
