Argentina Flying High on Malbec Wine Sales

A short piece at from thetimes-tribune.com praises the Malbec varietal, and makes note of Argentina’s continued success through the Great Recession.

The author starts off by noting the obscurity of Argentine wine not so long ago. “Hard to imagine that 10 years ago, wine from Argentina was a quaint discovery.”

Argentine wine exports to the USA have not only held strong throughout the Great Recession, but have actually grown. The author states that “even in the midst of the Great Recession, Argentine wine sales continue to soar. From 2008 to 2009, Argentine wine imports to the United States grew 18 percent, according to the Wines of Argentina.”

Argentina’s success through the Great Recession has to do with “so many good-tasting, low-cost wines coming from South America, people exploring the world for bargains are discovering Argentina.”

The author a little history lesson on the origins of the malbec grape. He writes, “the black grape traces its roots to France. Malbec was widely planted in Bordeaux, where it was a component of its red blends. Years ago, diseases and frost killed malbec.”

The wine made for domestic consumption in Argentina was quite poor, but “with the help of big names such as Paul Hobbs and Michel Rolland, they laid the groundwork for the modern industry and settled on France’s forgotten grape, malbec, which seemed to have an affinity for Argentina.”
