Catamarca

Catamarca, another arid region with lots of sun exposure, houses 2,455 hectares of vineyards. Soils range from stony to sandy and the altitude is about 1,500 to 1,800 meters (4,920 – 5,900 feet) above sea level. The average temperature throughout the year is 18ºC (65ºF).  Rainfall is nominal, and the Rio Abaucan (Abaucan River) irrigates the vineyards. Major varietals include Torrontes, Syrah, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Sub-regions in Catamarca include the Tinogasta (central-west) and Santa Maria (northeast) regions. Catamarca turns out 6.88 million kilograms (7,580 US tons) of grapes a year, and 34,528 hectoliters (9.1 million gallons) of Catamarca’s wine are authorized to be consumed by Argentineans. Key wineries of the region include Altos Andes, Bodega Michango, Bodegas y Viñedos La Rosa, Cabernet de los Andes, Elias J. Seleme, and Finca Don Diego
