Wine Varietals
Different types of wines are talked about in terms of varietals. “Varietals” or “varieties” refer to types of grapes used to make wine. Well known examples include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Gris. Lesser-known examples are Chenin Blanc, Riesling, Barolo, Semillon, Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo, and Sangiovese.
Argentina is world renowned for their Malbec (a red wine) and their Torrontes (a white wine).
All varietals have unique characteristics and specific environmental conditions under which they flourish (referred to as terroir, see Wine 101 section) and exhibit their typicity (see Wine 101 section).
