The Phrase Corked
The phrase “corked” refers to wine bottles that have a cork tainted with a disease called TCA (trichloroanisole)—giving the cork a foul, wet-dog type smell.
TCA can make wine’s natural flavors and aromas decrease and instead have a faint mildew taste and aroma. Depending on how knowledgeable the wine drinker is, corked wine can easily go undetected although an estimated 5% of wine is corked. (http://www.cellarnotes.net/corked_wine.htm)
