Carlos Gardel
Carlos Gardel is considered one of the most important players in tango music and transformed tango music from a local Argentine and Uruguayan tradition to the show the world knows today. He sang his “tango-song”—called Mi Noche Triste—in 1917, and since then sold record amounts of albums for that time. He performed all over South America and in the United States and Europe and recorded over 500 tango songs. He gave tango its star status.
Carlos Gardel was born in either France or Uruguay, but it is certain that he lived in Argentina from the age of two-and-a-half years. He died in a plane crash at the pinnacle of his career, and today is still idolized by much of the Argentine and Uruguayan population.
