Santiago del Estero Province

Santiago del Estero Province

Another northern province, Santiago del Estero has little economic activity with agricultural crops consisting mainly of cotton, goat products, and soybeans. Tourists attractions in Santiago del Estero include the Salinas Grandes (Large Salt Flats), one of the largest salt flats in the world and a major source of potassium and sodium, covering a whopping 8,290 kilometers squared (3,200 miles squared). Salt flats are truly a spectacular natural phenomenon especially to those who have not seen salt flats before.

There are popular thermal baths along the Rio Hondo (Deep River), a river running through the Santiago del Estero Province. The city of Santiago del Estero, founded in 1553, is the oldest city in Argentina although unlike other older Argentine cities, there is little old architecture. Santiago del Estero still houses some native Quechua speakers, although the Quechua language in Argentina is fading as time passes.
