Microcentro
The Microcentro of Buenos Aires, located along the Rio de la Plata, is the hub of Buenos Aires’ political and business buzz. The Plaza de Mayo (May Plaza), a central plaza surrounded by many important buildings, throughout history has witnessed many important moments and been the site for many protests in Buenos Aires’ and Argentina’s history, such as the 1810 revolution against Spain, Eva Peron’s speeches to the public (see Eva Peron section in Argentine Culture), the 2001 protests against the recession, and still today the Thursday demonstrations of The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (see Politics and History of Argentina section in Argentine Culture) who gather every Thursday. The Casa Rosada (Pink House), the salmon colored building east of Plaza de Mayo, houses governmental offices including President Cristina Kirchner’s office. There is also a Museo de la Casa Rosada (Pink House Museum) with exhibits about Argentine presidents (with a hefty section about Juan Peron). A mix of Baroque and Rococo ornamentation inside and Roman columns outside create the awe-inspiring Catedral Metropolitana (Metropolitan Cathedral), famous for holding Jose de San Martin’s tomb. The Museo de la Ciudad (City Museum) portrays Buenos Aires’ interesting history through photos, videos, quotes, and props. Galerias Pacifico (Pacific Galleries) is an upscale shopping center along busy Calle Florida (Florida Street), whose building dates back to 1889, with lots of shops and restaurants. The inside ceilings are filled with images painted in 1952 by artists such as Antonio Berni and Manuel Comeiro. Avenida 9 de Julio (9th of July Avenue)—sixteen lanes wide—is one of the main streets of the microcentro and in Buenos Aires, and also the widest street in the world. Accommodations include (from least to most expensive) Lime House (Lima 11, http://www.limehouse.com.ar/), Hotel Alcazar (Avenida De Mayo 935), and Tryp Hotel (San Martin II 474 http://es.solmelia.com/hoteles/argentina/buenos-aires/tryp-buenos-aires/home.htm).
