Graffiti as Art
Though artistic graffiti is a mainstream and recognized artistic trend in many of the United State’s cities and in Europe, Argentina has just recently acknowledged graffiti as an art form.
In Buenos Aires and other Argentine cities, lots of street corners have colorful artwork on them with subjects including animal etchings, portraits, meaningful words/quotes, cultural depictions, landscapes, and city life—not just the quick black scribble of meaningless words.
Many experts attribute the 2001 economic recession as a reason to turn to more experimentation in Argentine art, which created a trend in graffiti. Today, many forums and websites showcase the most interesting graffiti in the city and there are even graffiti tours in Buenos Aires.
