‹ Return to 1976 Military Dictatorship by Jorge Rafael Videla (The Dirty War)

Raul Alfonsin

Raul Alfonsin inherited many pressing problems in 1983, such as a failing economy, possible war crime trials, and hunger for 27% of the population.

He curtailed these troubles through distributing food, persecuting Dirty War officials, and cutting back on government spending. Alfonsin created the Trial of the Juntas to try and persecute Dirty War officials, including Jorge Rafael Videla.

Inflation still rose greatly and Argentina was in profound debt during the time of his presidency. Alfonsin supported the restoration of Argentine culture and many artists, writers, musicians, directors, and actors who went into exile during the military dictatorship returned to Argentina. In 1985, Argentina won one their first Academy Award for Best Foreign Film for director Luis Puenzo’s La Historia Oficial (“The Official Story”).

In the 2009 Academy Awards, director Juan Jose Campanella’s El Secreto de Sus Ojos (“The Secret of Their Eyes”) won for Best Foreign Film. Campanella’s 2001 film, El Hijo de la Novia (“Son of the Bride”), was nominated in 2001 for Best Foreign Film as well.
